Forestter Cobalt

Forestter Cobalt is an artist whose practice is rooted in analog collage, drawing primarily from the visual language of mid-twentieth-century children's books. Through a process of selection, fragmentation, and re-contextualization, he removes images from their original narrative settings, bringing attention to the overlooked visual elements that exist beyond the conventions of storytelling. In doing so, Cobalt transforms familiar imagery into compositions that occupy a space between abstraction and representation.

His work draws on the visual and conceptual legacies of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, while embracing the formal possibilities of found imagery. The colors, graphic simplicity, and illustrative qualities of his source material serve as a foundation for an exploration of shadow, movement, objects, landscape, architecture, and the symbolic associations of American Western mythology. These disparate elements converge through an intuitive process informed by visual rhythm, symbolism, and dream logic.

Although Cobalt occasionally employs the sequential grid structure of the comic book as a compositional device, his work resists linear narrative and prescribed interpretation. Fragments, gestures, and visual relationships invite viewers to construct their own associations and readings. The resulting compositions exist as open-ended visual narratives in which meaning is neither fixed nor singular.
